The Trench
MARTIN BRENT - THE TRENCH.
As another Armistice Day commemoration comes around, photographic artist Martin Brent turns his lens toward the lives of ordinary people caught in the chaos following the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. This work was shot with vintage uncoated lenses, in a fictitious trench that had been meticulously constructed to the specifications laid out in the 1914 British Army Manual of Field Engineering. The scene is populated by men of the same age as those who once volunteered, or were later conscripted, into the conflict. Martin’s evocative lighting heightens the sense of realism and emotional depth, crafting images that echo the fear, endurance, and quiet humanity of those who served. He captures not only the physical hardship of trench life but also the quiet dignity of the individuals entangled in history’s machinery. With this powerful body of work, Martin invites viewers to reflect on remembrance, sacrifice, and the enduring resonance of the ordinary person within extraordinary times.
