MARTIN BRENT - THE INBETWEEN PLACES.

This image is from Martin Brent’s Internationally awarded Inbetween Places project.

Found and tableaux landscapes formed from images of real world locations and structures. Martin named the project after the feeling he gets when he finds and photographs these places, “neither the beginning or the end of my journeys”.

The projects intention is to challenge the illusion of identity, nation state and artificial borders, it contextually reframes the landscape both geographically and metaphysically and in doing so walks a path first trodden by the Pittura Metafisica movement and its founder Giorgio de Chirico.

Also exploring recorded historical fact and chronology, the aim is to create new places, new or altered memories, sometimes utilising absurd juxtapositions, icons from popular culture and brands to create alternate historical threads, what might have been had certain events proceeded in alternate directions to what we see and are familiar with today.

‘STOP’ will be on display at the Royal Birmingham Society Of Artists Gallery, St Pauls Square, Birmingham until 3rd January 2026.

Dating back to 1821, in 1868 the Birmingham Society of Artists received its royal charter and was given official consent to use the term “royal” in its title. The RBSA has had some very notable members throughout its history and played an influential role within the Pre-Raphaelite and Arts and Crafts movements. Members and past presidents include Sir Robert Peel, William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, John Everett Millais, Lord Leighton, Bernard Fleetwood-Walker, Sir Charles Wheeler PRA and William Gear.

Private View: Thursday 20 November 6.00pm – 8.00pm
Exhibition closes: Saturday 3 January 2026 5.00pm
